Day 1: Welcome to Tanzania
- Morning: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Warm welcome by TeamPathfinder. Transfer to your lodge/hotel.
- Afternoon: Briefing session with your guides. Prepare for the trek.
- Evening: Enjoy a welcome dinner. Rest and anticipation.
- Note: Walking Distance – A gentle stroll in the hotel/lodge vicinity.
The journey begins with your arrival in Moshi, the gateway to Kilimanjaro. Settle into your lodge or hotel, where you’ll be briefed about the upcoming trek. This first day is all about acclimatizing to the local environment and preparing mentally for the adventure ahead.
The Rongai Route: An Overview
- This northern route, less traveled yet increasingly popular, offers a gradual climb and distinct views, ideal for those seeking a quieter path or hiking in the rainy season. With its moderate difficulty, it’s a perfect choice for both novice and seasoned trekkers.
Day 2: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
- Morning: Depart to Rongai Gate. Begin ascent.
- Afternoon: Lunch on the trail. Immerse in the lush rainforest.
- Evening: Arrive at Simba Camp. Dinner under the stars.
- Distance: 6 km.
- Altitude: 2,600m.
- Trekking Time: 3-5 hours.
After completing registration at Rongai gate, the trek commences, winding through fields and entering a lush pine forest. This day’s hike concludes at Simba Camp, located at the edge of the moorland zone, offering extensive views over the Kenyan plains.
Day 3: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp Via Second Cave
- Morning: Trek through moorlands.
- Afternoon: Lunch with views of the Kenyan plains at Second Cave.
- Evening: Reach Kikelewa Camp. Relax and acclimatize.
- Distance: 9 km.
- Altitude: 3,600m.
- Trekking Time: 6-7 hours.
Leaving Simba Camp, the trek progresses directly to Kikelelwa Camp. This part of the journey immerses you in the diverse landscapes of Kilimanjaro, showcasing the rich flora and fauna, including the magnificent Kilimanjaro Colobus monkeys. The camp offers a serene environment to rest and enjoy the natural beauty.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn
- Morning: Ascend to Mawenzi Tarn.
- Afternoon: Lunch with panoramic views.
- Evening: Prepare for activities at the camp. Early rest.
- Distance: 6 km.
- Altitude: 4,330m.
- Trekking Time: 4-5 hours.
The route now leads to Mawenzi Tarn Hut, set in a dramatic location beneath the imposing spires of Mawenzi. The journey to the hut takes you through a variety of terrains, with the landscape changing as you ascend. The hut’s location is ideal for rest and soaking in the breathtaking scenery.
Day 5: Staying at Mawenzi Tarn Hut for Acclimatization
- Morning: Explore the surroundings.
- Afternoon: Acclimatization hike. Capture stunning vistas.
- Evening: Bond with fellow trekkers. Share stories.
- Distance: Varied up to 4,500m
- Altitude: 4,330m.
- Trekking Time: 4-5 hours.
Acclimatization at Mawenzi Tarn Hut This day is dedicated to acclimatizing at Mawenzi Tarn Hut. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the surrounding area, including a hike to Mawenzi Ridge. The extra day at this altitude is crucial for acclimatization and enhances your chances of a successful summit attempt.
Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut
- Morning: Trek across the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’.
- Afternoon: Arrive at Kibo Hut. Brief rest.
- Evening: Early dinner. Final summit briefing.
- Distance: 8 km.
- Altitude: 4,700m.
- Trekking Time: 5-7 hours.
The trek continues as you cross the ‘Saddle,’ a lunar-like landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo. The day’s destination is Kibo Hut, situated at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Here, you’ll rest and prepare for the final ascent, surrounded by the stark beauty of Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude zones.
Day 7: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak
- Midnight to Morning: Summit attempt From Kibo Hut. Witness sunrise at Uhuru Peak.
- Afternoon: Descend via the Mweka-Barafu route to Mweka Hut.
- Evening: Well-earned rest. Reflect on the achievement.
- Distance: 6 km ascent, 15 km descent.
- Altitude: 5,895m.
- Trekking Time: 6-9 hours ascent, 7-9 hours descent. Total of 13-18 hours
The summit attempt is a challenging but rewarding experience. Departing from Kibo Hut, you’ll climb in the darkness, making your way up the switchback trail. The goal is to reach Gillman’s Point for sunrise, followed by the final push to Uhuru Peak. After the summit, the descent takes you via the Mweka-Barafu route to Mweka Hut, providing a different perspective of the magnificent landscape.
Day 8: Descent to Mweka Gate “Return to Civilization”
- Morning: Descend from Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate.
- Afternoon: Celebratory lunch. Receive your certificates.
- Evening: Transfer back to your hotel. Farewell dinner.
- Distance: Approximately 10 km.
- Altitude: Descend to 1,640m at Mweka Gate.
- Trekking Time: 4-6 hours.
The final day involves a descent from Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate, offering a scenic journey through lush forest terrain.
